Backbeat
The snare is in the push
Push a stick Left stick Right stick all the way out to the rim while its stream runs and the snare joins, automatically, on beats 2 and 4. Ease back off the rim and the snare drops out while the streams keep going.
- Either stick arms it. Riding the rim with the kick hand or the hat hand both work - whichever thumb has room.
- It's pressure, not aim. The tier is still chosen by direction, so leaning into the rim doesn't change what the stream is playing - it only brings the snare with it.
- It always lands on the beat. The snare places itself; the push decides whether it's there at all.
That makes the backbeat a dynamic you lean into: verses off the rim, choruses on it, a push for the drop. The bumpers reshape where it falls - half-time moves it to the 3, and R1 doubles it.
The triggers reach it too: the left trigger's lean raises its weight with the rest of the machine, and squeezing into the right trigger's snare roll arms it without a stick at the rim - see Lean and Roll.
The backbeat is one of the three machine lines in the voice map: point it at any note, or set it to None to switch the automatic snare off entirely while keeping the rim gesture free.
