The machine
Half-time and Doubling
The groove reshaped, held on the bumpers
The bumpers reshape the groove while held, and it returns when you let go. Like the Chords visits, they're held rather than switched.
- Hold the left bumper L1 for half-time. Every stream stretches to twice its interval and the backbeat moves to the 3. The sticks keep meaning what they meant.
- Hold the right bumper R1 to double the backbeat. Only the snare doubles; the kick and hat streams are untouched.
They compose
Hold both and the two make something neither does alone: the streams stay halved, and the doubled backbeat brings the snare back to 2 and 4 - a half-time groove that still swings its full-time snare. Release them in either order.
Everything stays locked to the same bar grid, so releasing a feel drops back in phase rather than restarting the beat.
Against the ratchets
The stick clicks double a single stream while held. Those compose with half-time too, and cancel it: L1 and L3 held together return the timekeeper to its tier's normal rate.
